GREEN@COMMUNITY
“Green@Community” is a consistent and comprehensive branding project led by CoDesign, which revamps recycling centres to arouse public interest and engagement. As a result, different communities have reported a 296% increase in their monthly recycling rate.
Commissioned by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, “Green@ Community” is a territory-wide revamp programme relaunching both staffed and self-service recycling centres in all of Hong Kong’s 18 districts. Gone are the often chaotic, temporary or even improvised setups, as these new community centres offer recycling stations, recycling stores and recycling spots according to community needs.
Customers now enter a bright, clean, well-organised space like a convenience store with clearly marked recycling bins and categories. Drinking water taps, hooks to hang recycling bags, and wash basins are available, creating a positive environment for the public. Some centres even have a room for sustainability workshops for public education and engagement.
These recycling centres have also been rebranded with a capital ‘G’ in ‘green’ and the number six ‘6’, which is homonymous with green in Cantonese. The bold graphics draw attention to green living and the Chinese proverb “六六无穷”, which means infinite prosperity. These recycling stores are quite different to dated government centres and are a breath of fresh air for the public. As a result, there has been a 296% increase in monthly collections, combined with a massive surge in public interest and participation in previously untapped demographics, such as young adults and families.
